An oddity

For at least a week now, my stats counter has been showing around a thousand hits per day from Russia.  I really doubt I have so many actual readers there (if I do, none has ever left a comment or other indication of it), but after this week's Russian e-mail dump apparently trying to influence the US election, I'm getting paranoid enough to wonder if Russian hackers consider even minor blogs that post about politics to be worthy of their attentions.  Has anyone else out there noticed anything like this in their stats?  Any ideas what it signifies?

I'm seeing it, too, although I'm getting 300 hits per day from Russia. I've seen this before. I think it's not hackers per se, but bots who are looking at the text as part of an intelligence gathering operation. Either way, the Russians think we're worth monitoring.

Maybe just bots looking for a vulnerable server?

There is a lot of it about right now and seeing as you are no fan of Pooty...

I never pay any attention to blog traffic because there is roughly zero. It's funny to see like 651 from Russia, though. That's almost three times what I get from the US. The NSA is just not doing their job. Good to know the KGB is. And just mentioning them will likely get us all in trouble.

I've experienced this as well for at least a week. My visitor stats show several hundred hits a day from Russia. Like Pinku-Sensei, I think it's bots rather than hackers.

I got 15,000 hits from Russia within the last week, and 3,000 within the last 24 hours, according to the Blogger stats page.

I've gotten this a lot on all three of my blogs this past weekend (until Tuesday when it dropped off).

I've been paranoid about it before, worried that it was some sort of password attack, but I was told it's mostly phrase-checking bots, and was told NOT to click on the link back to the source.

It used to be I'd get a lot of Chinese traffic on my WittyLibrarian blog, with comments, but I had to filter that out because 1) I can't read Mandarin and had no way to reply to the comments and 2) those bastards were not there to buy my books. /fume

Normally I would dismiss this as an oddity but...after the last few days, and especially after today, I can't.

I'm not trying to be a paranoid fool here, but...be careful, Infidel.

Thanks for all the replies! Glad to know I'm not the only one they've been showing an interest in. Still going to take a few precautions.

Me too, also. Russia jumped 50 places in the international list since last week.

Yes I get lots too. Spikes of between 50 and 500 hits. I assume it's an attempt to get you to click on the source links.

Interestingly, the number of hits from Russia has declined over about the last day. Maybe my posting this put them off?

The funny thing is, the hits I get from Russia don't seem to have any corresponding links on the "traffic sources" page. I do get spam source links on that page, but not Russian ones, or very rarely.

Yep. Same here. I had no idea what the traffic from Russia meant.

Just read this now, July 29. I noticed on my stats that I had over 1,000 hits on the 25th. My comment traffic did not reflect that. I had 2611 views from Russia, more than from the U.S., 2162! I think you may be on to something, since I've NEVER had that sort of traffic from Russia.

The Russians seem to like Internet Explorer. {shrug}

Looks like almost every blog is getting the same. No one seems to have been hacked or otherwise really affected, though. I guess we should all just keep calm and carry on.

Interestingly, though I've had about 4,000 Russian visits since 2008, none of them occurred in the last month.

This may be due to my lack of focus in the last month or so.

Yeah - interesting. I've had 14,000 hits over the past eights days from Russia. I have over 3,000 stories on my website about Japan, and I doubt anyone there cares that much about the subject.
Still... I can see that there is a huge influx of hits over a five minute period every once in a while... sometimes 200 hits... which means it is a bot scanning my blog. For what? I don't know. I do have the odd historical story of Japan and Russia going to war, or Russian interests in the northern islands of Japan... but those stories aren't being hit...
Because of the high number of 'visitors' from Russia, I thought there might be one story they liked... but no... it seems to be spread out over the entire 3,000+ story blog.
It is disconcerting to wonder if, after the US politics and poached e-mails scenarios, that Russia is looking for more ways to infiltrate our electronic media...
Then again... I did have legitimate Chinese visitors (even comments)... but there's a nation-wide ban apparently on my blog... except last week when three hits came through... and then nothing.

My traffic is still running 4 to 1 in favor of Russian pageviews over American ones.
